Greece Arcadia Titans

Coach: Roger Klimek, 20th year (217-197).

Current record: 6-3.

Classification/2014-15 finish: A1/ lost to Wilson Magnet in quarterfinals.

Starters back: Zach D’Arpino, 5 feet-10 inches, senior G; Dan Freese, 6-2 sr. F; Reggie Clark, 5-10 sr. G; Fidel Norris, 6-1 sr. F;

Starting lineup: Keith McGee, 6-2 sr. F; D’Arpino, Freese, Clark and Norris.

On the court: The Titans seem as experienced as can be expected, with an all-senior lineup and at least two others who have played significant minutes: Drew Freese, a 6-5 forward and 6-4 forward Jon Dueker. … McGee, a 2015 Democrat and Chronicle All-Greater Rochester Team member at Leadership Academy in Rochester after a vote by coaches in Section V, has provided a jolt. Arcadia had a hole in its lineup after the graduation of Jon Wilson. “(McGee) makes us a contender, without a doubt,” Klimek said. … The Titans needed more than McGee to lead the entire way against Irondequoit and put together a four-game win streak. Arcadia also lost to Greece Athena after a buzzer-beater. “We can all shoot threes pretty well,” Klimek said. … Freese, the team’s leading rebounder, produced double-digit scoring and rebounding in two of the team’s previous three games. … Arcadia played the first of two games against Batavia on Jan. 8. … Leading scorers: McGee (21.4 points per game), Clark (15.9) and D’Arpino (9.0).

One person’s list of must-see high school basketball players can be a target to blast on Twitter for another.

No problem.

It is understood a few suggestions are coming this way. There were disagreements about this list even before its publication.

So understand there is acknowledgement of the performance of Rush-Henrietta guard Reggie Robinson during the last season-and-a-half. The same goes for Honeoye Falls-Lima senior Tommy Eastman.

There have been big statistics produced by Edison’s Marique Simkin and Donte Crumpler, Churchville-Chili’s Malek Williams and Penfield’s De’Quan Smith. Performances by East High’s Zion Morrison and Christian Simmons of School of the Arts have not gone unnoticed, either. The same goes for Bishop Kearney’s Rian Carter and Webster Schroeder’s Brandon Gartland. It is known that Aquinas junior Jalen Pickett is a good player, too.

“I think Matthew Keenan (at Fairport) is playing at a different level, at times,” Victor coach and former All-Greater Rochester Co-Player of the Year Kevin Downey said. “He’s a scholarship basketball player.”

This list includes a scholarship player or two. There is a player in his first year of high school. There is a high-flier in this bunch and another player we’ve watched improve since he joined his team as an underclassmen.

This list may not include the area’s five top players, but they are worth jumping into your car to go see them play. Just one opinion. Let me know who would be on your list and why. We can have a blast on Twitter.

School: Bishop Kearney.

Position: Guard. Jersey number: 0.

Class: Senior.

Height/weight: 6-6/180 pounds.

Statistics: Averaging 19.0 points, four rebounds and three assists.

Coach speak: “The young man is 6-6 and can handle the ball like a point guard,” Bishop Kearney coach Kevin Goode.

From the notebook: Verbal commitment to Temple University of the Division I American Athletic Conference. …  You kind of wonder what happens to the slender Rose, if a game turns physical. Goode said an ability to finish drives to the basket is proof of Rose’s increased strength through off-season weight training. … 2015 All-Greater Rochester first team selection, after averaging 15.4 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists. … “He’s playing with a sense of urgency because this is his last year,” Goode said. … Wake Forest, Notre Dame, Stanford and George Washington also showed interest in the fourth-year varsity member.

School: Greece Arcadia.

Position: Forward. Jersey number: 3.

Class: Senior.

Height/weight: 6-2/180 pounds.

Statistics: Averaging 21.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and four assists.

Coach speak: “He’s been something. He could be a player (at the Division I level). When he dunks, he puts on a show. He’s freed up other kids, and  is very unselfish. He shares the ball, he’s not afraid to make the extra pass. You have to see him play,” Arcadia coach Roger Klimek said.

From the notebook: Scored 39 points in a tight loss to Greece Athena. … Also has scored 31 in a game earlier this season, scored 30 or more three times last season as a junior at Leadership Academy in Rochester. … 2015 AGR team after he averaged 19 points and five assists for the Lions, who played in the Class B state semifinals. … Would have been Leadership’s lone returning starter this season. “If he were still with us, we would be competing for a state title,” Leadership coach Reggie Simmons said. “He handles the ball. He shoots. He rebounds. He’s very athletic. He’s come a long way, in terms of playing defense. A very impactful player. You know where he is on the floor at all times.” … Son of Chauncey Leslie, an AGR guard at Marshall High, who played at the University of Iowa.

Class: Senior.

Height/weight: 6-6/230 pounds.

Statistics: Averaging 31.7 points, 17 rebounds, four assists and two blocks.

Coach speak;  “I think he’s the best, he’s ready for college. One reason is his maturity right now, he doesn’t let things rattle him. He understands that going to college, you need a whole ‘nother work-level,” McQuaid Jesuit coach Jack Leasure said.

From the notebook: Verbal commitment to University of Vermont of the Division I America East Conference. …Shooting percentage from the field this season is at 64. …. Season-high 48 points in Athena’s season-opener and has topped 30 points in six games. … 2015 first-team all-state and AGR Player of the Year. … “We probably have the best rebounder in Section V,” Greece Athena coach Jim Johnson said. … Practice habits led to a transformation of his body and a more athletic game. … “No one else but me (on this year’s Athena team) has really played on varsity. I feel like we have to gain more experience in the coming weeks, so we can be ready for sectionals and states. That’s all we are really missing. We have enough talent, but we’re just not used to the pressure or playing teams with shooters like (Fairport).”

From the notebook: His poise was apparent during his freshman season on the Fairport varsity. … Helped Fairport reach Section V tournament finals each of the last two seasons. … Fairport’s leading scorer this season. … Named to the 2015 AGR team after he averaged 15.5 points, seven rebounds and four assists. … “He kind of plays the whole game, including making teammates better,” Fitch said. … Grandson of former Rochester Royals guard Al Masino, a Section V Basketball Hall of Fame player at East High and coach at Eastridge.

From the notebook: Players and coaches were talking about Stewart, even after a couple of losses for McQuaid, earlier this season. … Leasure said he is trying to get the McQuaid team “to surrender the me, for the we,” so he won’t go overboard with praise for Stewart, but “you can tell right away he can be something special. You can tell he wants to get better.”  … Made 55 percent of his shots from the field so far. .. His production is almost to certain to go up, as he settles in. Finished with 20 points, 16 rebounds, four assists and four blocks against rival East High recently.

World of Inquiry’s Ayub Jeylani, right, tips the ball past McQuaid’s Mike Riedman during the Griffins’ 2-1 overtime win last month.

They made headlines last month because some of their players knelt during the national anthem, a sign of solidarity and show of support for 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and his “Black Lives Matter,” movement for social change.

But the World of Inquiry Griffins can play soccer and now they want the headlines to be about three-peating as a Section V champion. If that happens, their sights will be set on a state title in Class C. They made it to the state final just two years ago before losing.

Rochester boys soccer team stages anthem protest

The votes are in for the final Democrat and Chronicle boys soccer polls of the fall season and W.O.I went wire-to-wire as the No. 1 squad in the small-school poll for schools of Class B, C and D size. The Griffins (14-1-1) open the Class C1 tournament on Saturday against No. 8 Gananda or No. 9 North Rose-Wolcott. Their only loss was to Class AA McQuaid, 4-3, two weeks ago. They’d beaten the Knights (14-2) by a score of 2-1 last month. Their draw was to Edison/Monroe on Sept. 23.

Some other notes on the final polls:

  • Palmyra-Macedon (14-2) was the big mover in the small-school poll, jumping from eighth into a tie for second with Livonia. The Red Raiders, winners of 11 straight, beat Livonia, 2-1, in their regular-season finale on a pair of goals by Owen Wahl, who has 19 goals and five assists.
  • Naples is the only small-school squad to post an unbeaten regular season. No matter what happens in sectionals, that’s a feat to be proud of. The Big Green, 15-0-1 under coach Ryan Betrus, are led by Felipe Gonzalez (22 goals/13 assists) and Zach Dormer (18G/9A). Naples is the top seed in Class D1 and opens sectionals Friday against No. 9 Wheatland-Chili.
  • Canandaigua is the only large-school team still undefeated. Coach Mark Annesi’s Braves are 14-0-2 and ranked second in the poll behind Fairport. They’re the top seed in Class A1 and host No. 8 Brighton on Friday. Senior forward Jonathon Brown has 19 goals and nine assists. He also had 19 goals last fall.

Penfield and Bre McGrath, right, host No. 1 Fairport at 6:30 p.m. Friday in a matchup of teams ranked in the D&C Large-School Girls Soccer Coaches’ Poll. Fairport is No. 1; the Patriots are No. 7.

Top-ranked Fairport showed a crack in its armor on Saturday, playing to a 0-0 tie at Brighton and on Friday night the Red Raiders (9-0-1) play at Monroe County east-side rival Penfield, which is only 5-3-3 and ranked seventh but is a couple plays of having a much better record and being ranked higher. That won’t be an easy task to stay unbeaten.

It’s one of two matchups on Friday featuring ranked teams in the Democrat and Chronicle‘s large-school girls soccer poll. The other pits No. 6 Pittsford Sutherland (7-2-1) at No. 5 Brockport (8-2). That’s a 6 p.m. kick-off. The Fairport-Penfield match is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Nine of Penfield’s 11 matches have either finished in a tie (3) or has been a one-goal win (4) or one-goal loss (2). So if the Patriots start finding ways to turn those ties into wins, watch out. They lost 3-0 to Fairport in their first matchup, giving up a pair of goals early in the second half to turn a close match into a rout.

Spencerport girls are road warriors, off to 6-0-1 start

Sutherland has been anchored by defense. It has allowed only five goals in 10 matches and shut out seven foes behind senior keeper Mara Smith. The Knights have blanked five of their last six foes with the only goal coming in a 1-1 draw against No. 9 Aquinas.

Fair warning: Fairport new No. 1 in boys soccer poll

Fairport's Pete Critchlow, right, leads the Red Raiders with 12 goals and also has three assists. Fairport has won nine straight matches since an Aug. 31 loss to Rush-Henrietta, a setback it avenged last week with a 4-1 behind two goals from Critchlow and two from Diego Zavala.

Fairport’s Pete Critchlow, right, leads the Red Raiders with 12 goals and also has three assists. Fairport has won nine straight matches since an Aug. 31 loss to Rush-Henrietta, a setback it avenged last week with a 4-1 behind two goals from Critchlow and two from Diego Zavala.

The good news for the Fairport boys soccer team is the Red Raiders are the new No. 1 team in the Democrat and Chronicle‘s large-school poll.

The bad news for Fairport is that it’s the new No. 1 in the D&C poll.

Here’s why: The same day Rush-Henrietta became No. 1 earlier this month the Royal Comets lost 2-0 at Victor and have pretty much been in a free-fall ever since, possibly bottoming out with Wednesday’s 8-2 loss to Hilton. A day after Greece Athena ascended to the top spot last week, the Trojans went to Canandaigua and were whupped, 3-0.

Who’s the new No. 1 in D&C boys soccer poll?

You see where we’re going here. So, this is fair warning for Fairport. Watch your back and that starts with Thursday’s 7:30 p.m. match at Monroe County east-side rival, Penfield, which is only 4-4-1 but has won three of its last four. The Raiders won their first matchup on Sept. 9, 2-0. They are led by senior midfielder Pete Critchlow, who has 13 goals and two assists, and senior midfielder Nick Guida, who has one goal and 10 assists. Last year’s Section V Class AA runners-up are well-rested, too. They haven’t played since last week when they beat R-H, 4-1, behind a pair of goals from Critchlow, two from Diego Zavala and Chris Barker chipped in with two assists. That avenged the Raiders’ only loss, a 3-2 setback to R-H on Aug. 31.

Critchlow isn’t available for Thursday’s match, coach Gianni Bussani said, because of yellow-card suspension.

Canandaigua (11-0-1) appeared like it could have taken over the top spot this week. Coach Mark Annesi’s team turned in a big win over then-No. 1 Athena, but all the victory did was move the Braves up from third to second, Fairport from second to first and Athena dropped to third. Apparently voters weren’t dismayed about McQuaid’s 1-0 loss to small-school No. 1 World of Inquiry because the Knights actually moved up a spot from fifth to fourth. W.O.I., or School No. 58 in the Rochester School District, made headlines off the field this week when its players chose to kneel during the national anthem before Tuesday’s 1-0 win at Aquinas.

Brighton's Lian is football coach of the week

Brighton football coach Stephen Lian

Brighton football coach Stephen Lian

One phrase high school coaches are overheard saying to their teams is to ignore what the experts say.

Unless, that is, they say something that is irrefutably spot-on.

The Section V football committee named Brighton football coach Stephen Lian as this week’s Buffalo Bills High School Football Coach of the Week, an honor that comes on the coat-tails of his upstart Barons edging perennial power Canandaigua, 21-20, in overtime on Saturday. The Braves entered the game ranked fourth the the Democrat and Chronicle High School Football Large-Schools Coaches’ Poll.

Before the Barons went to play at Evans Field, sportswriters at the D&C said undefeated Brighton — despite being undefeated — was an underdog. Consider that Canandaigua was also undefeated and it was homecoming, not to mention the Braves had history on their side with eight Section V titles to Brighton’s zero.

The Barons took their coach’s advice, however, choosing not to listen to the experts and instead settle it on the field, and now Lian receives $1,000 for the football program. He is also eligible for the $1,000 Buffalo Bills High School Football Coach of the Year in Section V award.

Previous weekly award winners in Section V included Victor’s Geoff Mandile, Canandaigua’s Jeff Welch and Red Jacket’s Josh Henninger.

Tewksbury graduated in 1984, and remains among Section V boys soccer all-time leaders in goals scored with 106. A two-time Democrat and Chronicle All-Greater Rochester team member, Tewksbury scored 38 and 39 goals during his junior and senior seasons, respectively.

Livonia’s athletic department claims Tewksbury was the first player from Livingston County named to the AGR soccer team.

Downey was a co-AGR Player of the Year in boys basketball in 2001, as the Bulldogs won the Section V Class B championship during his senior year. The two-time AGR team member was Livonia’s all-time leading scorer with 1,647 points when he graduated and was inducted into the Section V Basketball Hall of Fame with his late father, Tom Downey, in 2006. Kevin Downey also was a two-time Livingston County league baseball player.

Spencerport sophomore Erin Coykendall, defended here by Elisabeth Stowell, leads the Rangers with six goals and has 18 over the past two seasons.

Everyone knows how hot it was this summer, so when the Spencerport girls soccer team beat three teams in a span of five days in early September coach Jamie Schneider treated his players to ice cream.

“On the road and in that heat, they really battled,” Schneider said.

They’ve continued the fight and now the reward is six straight home matches because every match in the Rangers’ impressive 6-0-1 start has been on the road. Spencerport, which stayed in the No. 2 spot behind Fairport (9-0) in the Democrat and Chronicle’s large-school coaches’ poll, plays its home opener at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against Webster Thomas (3-3-1).

Dominating Fairport girls are No. 1 in D&C soccer poll

The Rangers are coming off two solid matches, a 1-1 draw at No. 2 Webster Schroeder on Saturday and 1-0 win on Tuesday at No. 8 Penfield. Sophomore Leah Wengender scored the tying goal with just 74 seconds left in regulation at Schroeder. Top scorer Erin Coykendall netted the winner on Tuesday. The sophomore who was an All-Greater Rochester pick in soccer and lacrosse last school year has a team-high six goals. She had 12 last year and seven of those came off headers, Schneider said.

“She’s small but she has a great tactical sense for the game. She makes great runs,” Schneider said. “She’s gifted that way.”

Spencerport also has been boosted by the play of sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Oplanden, a transfer from Greece Arcadia who has five shutouts.

Spencerport goalie Lauren Oplanden, right, makes a save while colliding with Webster Schroeder's Anna Hewlett during Saturday's 1-1 tie in Webster.

The Rangers returned almost their entire lineup from last year’s 13-3-2 club that earned the top seed in the Section V Class A tournament but was upset by eventual champion and No. 9 seed Brighton, 3-2, in overtime in the quarterfinals. Spencerport’s last title came in 2007; before that, it was 1978.

“We have very high hopes. The goal is to win a sectional championship,” Schneider said.

Ryan Lindeman, left, leads Greece Athena with six goals and six assists. The Trojans are the new No. 1 in the Democrat and Chronicle’s large-school coaches poll.

Just two years ago, Greece Athena had never won a Section V title in boys soccer and the program had undergone a messy coaching change. Longtime coach Bill Hueber was ousted after two controversial votes by the board of education and Mike Butler, a veteran coach in the district in girls soccer and girls basketball, took over.

Two years later, the Trojans are two-time defending Section V Class A1 champions and also own the ultimate in their trophy case: the 2015 state crown. They’re also the new No. 1 team in the Democrat and Chronicle‘s large-school coaches poll (Class AA and A). Athena (6-0-1) moved up to take the spot of Rush-Henrietta (4-2), which promptly lost at Victor and Penfield after being anointed the area’s top team.

Rush-Henrietta is No. 1 in first D&C boys soccer poll

Athena has outscored opponents 20-8 but half of its wins are by a goal, so the Trojans have been far from dominant. In fact, they haven’t even registered a shutout. Senior midfielder Ryan Lindeman leads the attack with six goals and six assists, C.J. Takatch has four goals and Nick Visca three. Look for them to get by Aquinas (1-6-1) in a Wednesday night road match, but then comes maybe their biggest test to date. Athena plays at No. 3 Canandaigua (8-0-1) at 4:30 p.m. Friday. The Braves are no joke. Coach Mark Annesi’s squad has outscored teams 24-4 and is led by one of the area’s top scorers in senior forward Jonathon Brown (10 goals/4 assists).

Canandaigua, which moved up from No. 5, has never won a sectional title in boys soccer. It can stamp itself as a contender Friday.

There’s another big match on Wednesday, as McQuaid (7-1) plays World of Inquiry (7-0) at Franklin at 4 p.m. How big is the large-school/small-school gap? We’ll find out. McQuaid, under new coach Nino Pilato, is No. 5 among large schools and WOI is No. 1 among small schools for the second straight week. The Griffins have outscored teams, 44-4, but this will be their first match against a quality large school. Two-time All-Greater Rochester pick Toyi Hakizimana, a sophomore forward, has 13 goals and 9 assists and junior midfielder Ayub Jeylani has 17 goals and 3 assists for WOI.
